Week One

Day 1
prompt

Prompt

Friendships bring a lot of satisfaction to our lives, but sometimes they get off track. What are some reasons this might happen?

Connecting

Connecting

What did your observations have in common?

challenge

Daily Challenge

Today, really listen to your friends. Value their opinions and be open to having differing perspectives.

Day 3
prompt

Prompt

Communication is key to maintaining healthy friendships. What sort of difficulties arise when we wait to work through any differences?

Connecting

Connecting

What was similar in your observations?

challenge

Daily Challenge

Today, commit to addressing difficult topics quickly rather than allowing them to fester. You don’t need to confront your friend, but rather invite them, or ask whether they’d be willing to have a conversation about… and then name what it is. When both people are willing to listen, it is worth the effort!

Day 4
prompt

Community Circle

Prompt

If something hurtful happens between friends or in class, what signals or words can we use to call attention to it without being defensive, abrasive or blaming?

NoteLet circles work with this for part of the time, and then, if they’re in several small circles, ask each circle to report back to the larger group ideas they had. If it is one large circle, you might recap some of the good ideas. If the following ideas haven’t surfaced, you might add that saying “ouch” if you’re the one who feels hurt, and replying with “oops” if you said the hurtful thing, then anybody can say “pause,” place a hand on your chest to indicate the desire or willingness that we stop for a moment, take a deep breath and talk it through.

challenge

Daily Challenge

Today, be aware of the biases or cultural influences that color your interactions with others. Strive to be compassionate and acknowledge any hurtful statement or action right away.

Day 5

Community Circle Day

Most successful people don’t find success overnight. They had to work at it. You have been working towards it by all you’ve learned at school, but there’s more to getting to your goals. So now let’s look at how you’ll continue to grow that success. What are some things kids your age can do to stay on the path of success? Let’s each share a thought as we go around the circle.

It can be overwhelming to think about all the things that are needed in changing the world or making it a better place. This quote helps bring the balance and perspective. Without naming that person, can you describe one act of kindness or support you could do that would make a difference?

Talk about a time in your life that held the possibility for you of “paying it forward.” It could be a kindness someone did that you realized you, too, could do for others.
