For Primary Teachers: Month 4

Week One

Day 1
prompt

Prompt

With your partner today, talk about the kinds of things your teachers do to help students feel safe.

Connecting

Connecting

For your last minute, see if there is anything you’d like us to do in our school to make sure students feel more safe.

challenge

Daily Challenge

Today, notice times you feel the safest here at school.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Feeling safe is one of the best feelings ever, isn’t it? Did you all feel safe today? Who wants to share a time they felt really safe today?

tip

Prepare

Note: Tomorrow is another fun day. Arrange for something that will help your class laugh together.

This Friday’s circle is the first stress reduction circle activity. Review this guide so you are prepared on Friday. Also, please watch the three-minute video ahead of time.

Day 2
prompt

Prompt

Today is a fun day. Introduce your activity.

Connecting

Connecting

What did you enjoy the most about today’s fun? What felt best about laughing today?

challenge

Daily Challenge

Today, take some time to laugh with your friends. When you do, make sure you’re ALL laughing and that no one feels left out.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Who remembered to laugh with friends today? How did it go for you?

Day 3
prompt

Prompt

If you could have some time with someone you really admire, who would that be and where would you like to go together or what would you like to do together?

Connecting

Connecting

What did your people have in common?

challenge

Daily Challenge

Today, see if you can find good qualities in someone around you. We can usually find one or two things we can admire in people when we really look, even in people we might not know that well. And even in people we might think we don’t like!

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Did someone see a great quality in someone that they might have missed before? Don’t name the person but tell us what that great quality was. Sometimes finding good qualities in people can feel like a treasure hunt!

Day 4
prompt

Prompt

When life is tough, there’s usually something we reach for to make things feel better, and often it’s food. We call these “comfort foods.” Do you have a favorite food that makes you feel better? Is it good for you or maybe not so healthy?

Connecting

Connecting

Did you have anything in common about your choices in comfort food?

challenge

Daily Challenge

One thing for us to think about is that some comfort foods we choose are probably healthy enough for us, but maybe some are not. Today, notice what other options you also have for when you’re wanting comfort.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Did someone wish for their comfort food today? Did someone maybe think about changing up their comfort food?

Day 5
Introduction

Stress Reduction Circle Day

Introduction

Stress is the uncomfortable feeling we have when we have more homework than we can finish in a night and we have to make choices about what to leave undone.

Stress can be the uncomfortable feeling we have when we have to choose between finishing homework and getting enough sleep.

Kids can feel stress when their parents work long hours and the kids in the family have to take on more responsibility than they feel they can manage.

Although we all know that stress is an uncomfortable feeling inside us, there is more to it than that.  Stress can make other things hard, too! And can make us behave differently than we normally do. Today we’re going to watch a video that shows kids talking about handle stress.

Connecting

Connecting

What did you find interesting about today’s video. Let’s going around the circle so everyone can share.

challenge

Daily Challenge

Today, notice when stress interferes with your life.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Stress can really affect, can’t it? Even little choices like who to sit with at lunch or what to say when your name is called. Who experienced stress today?

Note: Remind students that everyone feels stress from time to time so it’s not uncommon or abnormal.

Week Two

Day 1
prompt

Prompt

This one is about nature. Share what you notice and what you like or don’t like about the seasons of the year. What activities do you like that are dependent on certain seasons?

Connecting

Connecting

For your last minute, have a conversation about why seasons are important.

challenge

Daily Challenge

Seasons give us options for different kinds of sports and different kinds of plants. Winters allow snow to get deep in the mountains so we can have water in our rivers and streams during the drier summer seasons. There are lots of reasons most regions of our world have seasons. Today, notice a few things that are great about the season we’re in right now.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Who wants to share something about this season we’re in right now that they appreciate.

tip

Prepare

Thursday is another fun day and Friday is a Stress Reduction Circle day. Watch this mindfulness video ahead of time.

Day 2
prompt

Prompt

Describe one or several people with whom you most enjoy spending time and talk about why. It might be that they make you laugh, or that they listen, or forget about your problems… And we’re practicing not naming names, but rather describing that person’s traits – what they do that we so enjoy.

Connecting

Connecting

How were your descriptions of enjoyable people similar?

challenge

Daily Challenge

It is wonderful to have a range of people we enjoy. One thing about using this program is that some of you will find new friends in the process. Today, notice the people you enjoy spending time and think about why. You’ll probably realize you have a lot more friends now than at the beginning of the school year.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Did anyone realize that they’ve made new friends this year? Using 5 Radical Minutes every day will help us make more and more friends throughout the year.

Day 3
prompt

Prompt

People in other parts of the world often live differently than we do here.  Today we’re going to think about why that might be so.  Today, imagine that we lived someplace where it is very very cold every single day.  VERY cold!  How would we dress differently?  How might we eat differently?  How might we play outside differently?

Connecting

Connecting

Today let’s share with the whole class…. Someone tell me something one of you thought of about how we might live differently if it were very cold every single day?!

challenge

Daily Challenge

Sometimes people who seem different from us have moved from a place where they lived differently than we do.  But inside, we all are the same… we want people to love and care for us.  Today notice how easy it can be to like someone who is different from you.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Who noticed beautiful things about other people today?

Day 4
prompt

Prompt

Today is a fun day. Use a circle format.

Introduce your activity, whether it be a video, dance, skit, etc. Remember that the goal today is laughter!

Connecting

Connecting

With your partner, just talk about what you enjoyed most.

challenge

Daily Challenge

It is good to just have fun sometimes! Notice things that make you smile today. Do you have suggestions for your teacher that would be great for our fun days? Please let him or her know!

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Did anyone remember to keep smiling today? Fun adds to much goodness to our lives, and helps make our days go better.

Day 5
Introduction

Introduction

Today we’re going to watch another video with kids talking about mindfulness, and at the end of it, instead of our usual paired sharing, we’re going to be sharing an idea around the circle.

prompt

Prompt

Watch the Mindfulness video here.

Connecting

Connecting

Let’s take a moment and share how we’re feeling by using one word. [You can choose to have them say a color, an object, or leave it open to their imagination.]

Now let’s all take 3 deep breaths through our noses. Put a hand on your belly so you can feel it get big when you breathe in.

Let’s go around the circle again and see how many of us feel differently now that we’ve taken a moment to slow down.

challenge

Daily Challenge

Today, continue to be aware of what stresses you out both at school and afterward.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Did you remember to keep noticing stress in your body? Soon we’ll be learning ways to make these stressful times a bit easier to handle.

Week Three

Day 1
Introduction

Introduction

This is a practice again of talking about a type of person, or maybe several people, but not talking about them by name.

prompt

Prompt

Share your views on what makes someone trustworthy. Trustworthy people are people whose words we believe. What do people do that allows us to trust them? What makes what someone says easy or difficult to believe?

Connecting

Connecting

What did you have in common in your descriptions?

challenge

Daily Challenge

We often feel a small twinge of guilt right before we do something that would not be trustworthy. Today, notice when this might happen. Think about what got you to this point. Listen to that message from inside and take a moment before you decide to go forward.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

How many were able to practice being their best self by listening to that message from inside? Who wants to share how good it felt to make a choice to be trustworthy?

tip

Prepare

Wednesday is a Circle Day and Friday is a Stress Reduction Day. Check ahead for details.

Preview this video for Friday on more reasons kids enjoy mindfulness.

Day 2
prompt

Prompt

Sometimes we get our feelings hurt, or hurt someone else’s feelings. When that happens, it is important to talk about it and work it out.  What makes working it out easier? Talk about things we can do or ways we can behave that make it easier to work out our differences.

Connecting

Connecting

With your partner, think up with the longest list you can of ways that people help make it easier to work through differences.

challenge

Daily Challenge

For the rest of today, notice whether you are really willing to help work something out with someone or whether you expect them to do all the work. Let’s all be helpers, whether someone has hurt us or we’ve hurt someone else. This willingness can make a really big difference and helps us be our best selves.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Did you choose to be willing to work out problems today? How does it feel to be our best selves?

Day 3
prompt

Prompt

Talk about anger. What does anger do to friendships? What does it do to the person who is angry and what does it do to the person with whom they’re angry? How much does it matter how we manage our anger? What lessons have you learned either because of your own anger or someone else’s?

Remember to talk about a behavior and not a person.

Connecting

Connecting

Were there similar thoughts about the impact of anger on your friendships or relationships?

challenge

Daily Challenge

In and of themselves, emotions aren’t so much the problem as how we manage those emotions. Sometimes anger is what helps us to take action instead of letting someone bully us. Sometimes angry people are the ones start a movement that makes a difference. Today, let yourself notice your emotions and think about whether there is a way to use them as a force for good.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Who wants to share how your emotions helped motivate you to be a force of good today?

Please email any feedback your classroom has to 5 Radical Minutes, with “Prompt Feedback” in the subject line. We truly love hearing about new ideas!

Day 4
Introduction

Community Circle Day

Introduction

Each day, we take five minutes to either talk and listen, or to do a circle or a Blue Sky Moment.

prompt

Prompt

What have you learned or noticed by doing our five-minute activities?  What is one thing you could say about this time we spend each day?

Connecting

Connecting

Let’s hear from a few of you… were there things kids said that were similar?

challenge

Daily Challenge

Today look for times to listen to someone so you learn more about them.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Did anyone find times to listen to others today?

Day 5
Introduction

Stress Reduction Circle Day

Introduction

We will do one more video on mindfulness today, and then we’ll start alternating some days when we just do mindfulness, and some days when we watch videos about it.  This is a quick, fun video where kids share why they like feeling calm inside.

Watch this 3-minute video on some of the reasons kids love calming down inside.

prompt

Prompt

Today let’s just all do a couple of the things we saw the kids in the video do to calm down.

  • First, let’s all just lift our arms slowly as we breathe in (do it…)  Great… and now slowly let them come down as we breathe out….  Great!
  • Let’s do that again (repeat three or four times).
  • Now lets make sure we’re not too close to one another – move in or out of the circle to make more room for yourself… and keep your feet rooted where they are and let’s very slowly turn our bodies one way and let our arms flow with us, and then turn the other way and let them just relax and follow us around…. (do that for 30 seconds or so)..   Great!
  • And now let’s hold our arms up and imagine that we are a tree and there is a very gentle breeze, and our arms are tree limbs just very gently swaying in the breeze. We could make a very gentle sound of the breeze while we do this….
challenge

Daily Challenge

Today, try calming down by doing these things when you have a minute.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

How many of you remembered to take a deep breath today when you felt overwhelmed or upset or stressed? How did it help you?

Week Four

Day 1
Introduction

Introduction

Today we’re going to think about how, as we grow up, we learn that something we used to be afraid of isn’t scary any more!  As we grow older, we can learn more how to manage our fears.

prompt

Prompt

Talk about something that you were afraid of when you were little, like before you were in school.  Now that you aren’t afraid of that any more, what do you know about being afraid?  What happened so you could see that you didn’t have to be afraid of that any more?

Connecting

Connecting

Was there anything similar about how you realized you had overcome your fear?

challenge

Daily Challenge

We get over things by taking small steps.  Sometimes overcoming a fear is a matter of taking the first step, and that takes courage!  Today, look for people who have courage!

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Did you see people showing courage?  Let’s hear from a few of you.

tip

Prepare

Note: Later this week will be both a fun day and a Community Circle day. Read ahead and prepare.

Day 2
Introduction

Introduction

Now we’re going to begin to use stress reduction skills for just a moment to help us listen to one another from deeper inside. Before our prompt today, we’re going to take 30 seconds to breathe way deep in our lower belly. Close your eyes, put your hand on your tummy and make it get bigger when you breathe in and smaller when you breathe out. I’ll ring the bell when our 30 seconds is up.

Ring the bell after 30 seconds.

prompt

Prompt

When we open our eyes and look at our partner, listen from your heart.  Today, talk about someone who you can always trust.  What kinds of things do they do that help you trust them?

Connecting

Connecting

Were there similarities in the people you described?

challenge

Daily Challenge

Today, think about really listening from our hearts and caring for others when they talk with us.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Did thinking about kindness and compassion today help as you interacted with people? Did it make your interactions better? Let’s hear some stories.

Day 3
Introduction

Introduction

Today we’re going to talk about what we love to do when we aren’t at school. First, let’s take three deep breaths, and let yourself find the part of your heart that cares about others. Open your eyes when you hear the bell.

Ring the bell after 30 seconds.

prompt

Prompt

Describe your perfect Saturday! What you like to do, where you like to go, and who like you to spend time with – anything that helps make a day meaningful for you.

Connecting

Connecting

Did you have anything in common?

challenge

Daily Challenge

It is just as important for us to have fun days as it is to have days at school.  But we can also have really fun moments at school, too.  Today, look for really fun moments.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Who found fun moments today?

tip

Prepare

Next week you’ll be using a template for students to draw their anger on a t-shirt.  So you’ll have time to run off copies, a link to that download is here.

Day 4
prompt

Prompt

Introduce your fun day.

Connecting

Connecting

With your partner, share what you liked most about today’s activity.

challenge

Daily Challenge

Today try to find ways to help one another laugh.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Who is still laughing? How did laughter make your day better?

Day 5
Introduction

Community Circle Day

Introduction

Today we’re going to talk about kindness from a place of imagining, and we’re going to focus on how kindness helps make life happier for us. First we’re going to close our eyes and breathe and relax.  While your eyes are closed, picture a time when someone was kind to you.  Let yourself see that kindness.  Let yourself feel inside what it is like when someone is kind to you.  OK, let’s close our eyes…

Pause for 30 seconds or so… ring the bell.

prompt

Prompt

When it is your turn, share with the group one or two words that describe how you feel inside when people are kind. Remember the video we watched where kids used words like “rainbow” or “purple”? You can use any kinds of words that help you describe how good it feels inside when someone is kind.

challenge

Daily Challenge

One of the ways others become more kind is by experiencing kindness from us. Today look for a moment when YOU can be kind to someone else.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Tell us about some opportunities to be the kindness in conversation that you had today.
