For Primary Teachers: Month 5

Week One

Day 1
Introduction

Introduction

Sometimes people’s feelings get hurt.  Sometimes we hurt someone’s feelings even when we don’t mean to. Today we’re going to talk about what kids can do when that happens.

prompt

Connecting

Connecting

How is feeling proud of something different than bragging? (Bragging is when we think we want to feel better than someone else.  We can feel proud of doing a good job without comparing ourselves to anyone else.)

Day 5
prompt

Prompt

Yesterday we talked about something we did that made us feel good to accomplish.  In the circle today, before we speak, let’s take a moment for three deep breaths

[Pause. Lead them in that.]

And now take a moment to think of something you look forward to learning, doing or accomplishing in the future.  What is something you look forward to knowing how to do. When it is your turn, step forward into the circle and say what you want to do, and then EVERYBODY CHEER!!  And we need to cheer just the same for every kid and every idea, even if it isn’t something you want to learn or do.  So first, let’s practice cheering… Everybody cheer!!  YAY!!!   OK, who wants to start?

challenge

Daily Challenge

Today, cheer people on for their dreams and their efforts!

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Did you remember to keep noticing stress in your body? Soon we’ll be learning ways to make these stressful times a bit easier to handle.

Week Three

Day 1
Introduction

Introduction

Does anybody know what “grit” is?  [Let kids answer if hands go up.] Today we’re going to watch a short video all about grit.

Watch the video.

prompt

Prompt

Grit is being tough and trying again. Persistent is trying again and resilient is being a little bit tough.  Or maybe a lot tough. People with grit learn from their mistakes instead of giving up or blaming someone else.  Maybe it’s working really hard at learning something like how to jump rope or ride a bike. With your partner today, give examples of people you know who have grit. What do they do that lets you know they have grit?  You could say, “I know someone who has grit because…”

Connecting

Connecting

What did your examples have in common?  Are there ways friends can help one another develop or gain grit?

challenge

Daily Challenge

Today look for moments when you could use a little grit.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Did anyone notice grit today? Did someone keep going even when it was hard?

tip

Prepare

Thursday is a Community Circle. Make a quick list of the kinds of tasks, activities or learning that might be difficult for students your kids’ age.

Friday is a Blue Sky Moment.Preview this video for Friday on more reasons kids enjoy mindfulness.

Day 2
Introduction

Introduction

We’re going to talk more about grit today.  Who remembers the two things that make up grit?

[See if kids can remember…. One is trying again and one is being tough.]

prompt

When you see a friend who is having a hard time, what are the words you can use to encourage your friend to have grit?

Connecting

Day 3
prompt

Prompt

We’re going to talk more about grit today.  Who remembers the two things that make up grit?

[See if kids can remember…. One is trying again and one is being tough.]

Sometimes when we need grit, what helps the most is what we tell ourselves. We call that “self talk.”  We can help ourselves a lot by talking to ourselves, just on the inside. Today with your partner, talk about the words kids could say to themselves to help them get through something difficult.

Connecting

Connecting

Did you think of some of the same words and messages?

challenge

Daily Challenge

Today, try some encouraging self talk when you’re facing something difficult. This can be quietly on the inside, but it can make a big difference!

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Who was able to do some difficult things today because of self talk? This is grit!

Please email any feedback your classroom has to 5 Radical Minutes, with “Prompt Feedback” in the subject line. We truly love hearing about new ideas!

Day 4
Introduction

Community Circle Day

Introduction

Note: Think about a few things that are common struggles for kids in your class so you can readily throw out an idea or two to get them started. Riding a bike, learning math, reading sight words, whatever.  Have your own list, but just for a fall-back if kids don’t readily come up with their own ideas.

Today we’re going to find ways we can help each other have grit.

prompt

Prompt

When it is your turn, you get to choose one thing that might be hard for a kid your age. So maybe you choose “learning sight words” might be hard for some kids, and then the whole circle – popcorn style – “Who has an idea for what you could say to a friend or do for a friend who was having trouble learning sight words?” We’ll go around the circle with each student sharing an idea of what might be hard for some kids that are their age, and the other kids try to think of something you could say to encourage grit.

Connecting

Connecting

Look how many different ideas and words we came up with to help foster grit!

challenge

Daily Challenge

Today see if there is a time someone could use some encouragement to find their own grit.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Did anyone find someone who needed encouragement today?

Day 5
Introduction

Blue Sky Moment Day

Introduction

Today, you will be leading your students through a Blue Sky Moment. Just follow the script below.

Today, boys and girls, we’re going to do a closed-eye imagining.  You can close your eyes or if you want, you can bow your head downward and look at your hands folded in your lap, but we aren’t going to look at one another.

OK, close your eyes now, and imagine that you are trying to ride a bike for the first time. And you might fall down, but something inside you says, “Get up and try it again.  You’ve got this!” So see yourself get up and try again.  You are determined to try again!

[Pause.]

Now imagine that you are on the play ground and there is a set of monkey bars that kids are going on and you have to hold on over your head and swing from one rung to the next to move to the other side.  And you try it and you make it for three bars, and then your hand slips and you let go.

Imagine that kids near you are saying, “You can do it!” and you are saying to yourself, “I am going to DO this!” and you try again and you make it for five rungs…. Continue trying and getting more and more rungs until…You finally make it to the end.

Everybody cheers for you!!!  What does it feel like inside?

Now picture yourself watching someone else who makes it all the way to the end. OK let’s open our eyes and everybody cheer because you made it to the end and so did the other kids!  YAY!!!

Connecting

Connecting

What did you learn by doing this imagining?

challenge

Daily Challenge

Look for times you can cheer kids on!

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Who encouraged someone else today? I hope we all continue to do this so we’re a whole class of encouragers!

Week Four

Day 1
prompt

Prompt

We’re going to watch this video on making mistakes…

Watch the video.

Connecting

Connecting

With your one minute of connection, how many emotions can you identify that Sara had?

challenge

Daily Challenge

Sarah had anger and frustration at first, but then Pevan helped her understand that we all make mistakes and we just need to try again. Today look for times when you might succeed by trying again.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Who found a time when you needed to try again?

[If they don’t have an example, tell a couple of yours.]

tip

Prepare

Thursday is a Community Circle and Friday is a Blue Sky Moment.

Day 2
prompt

Prompt

Today we’re going to watch another video on making mistakes. This one has kids talking to a nice gentleman who is a great listener…

Watch the video.

Connecting

Connecting

What is one thing you liked about what some of the kids said?

challenge

Daily Challenge

Look to see whether there are times today when you make a mistake, and what you can learn from it.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Did anyone learn from a mistake today? It’s such good news to know that we can keep learning even when things do go the way we’ve planned.

Day 3
Introduction

Introduction

Today we’re going to learn a new word. “Consequence.” Does anybody know that word?
Consequences can be something we like or something we don’t! A consequence is what happens because… I dropped a rock in the water. BECAUSE I dropped a rock in the water, there were ripples out from it. The ripples are the consequence. BECAUSE I wasn’t looking where I hit the ball, I broke our neighbor’s window. The broken window is the consequence of hitting the ball without paying attention.

prompt

Prompt

With your partner today, talk about a cartoon or video or movie that you saw where somebody made a mistake.  What was the consequence of that mistake?

Connecting

Connecting

Were there things that were similar in your examples?

challenge

Daily Challenge

What do people need from us when they make mistakes? Yes!  Encouragement and, if their mistake was hurtful, they might also need forgiveness.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Did anyone get the opportunity to encourage someone today?

tip

Prepare

Next week you’ll be using a template for students to draw their anger on a t-shirt.  So you’ll have time to run off copies, a link to that download is here.

Day 4
prompt

Community Circle Day

Prompt

Play this video up to 1:15, just the boy running and a few seconds of the baseball game until the speaker says, “Some people tell themselves.”

Go around the circle and share what it means to you – what this short video meant to you about greatness. Why would they have shown two such different examples of greatness – a boy who is really having to work hard to run and a kid who looks like he is really good at his sport even though he is missing part of his arm. What makes them both great?

Connecting

Connecting

If you were to learn a new skill, what might that be interesting to you?

challenge

Daily Challenge

Today let’s look for all the kinds of skills that all our classmates have.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

How many noticed the skills of their classmates? We have a great group of really talented people in our class, don’t we?

Day 5
prompt

Blue Sky Moment

Prompt

Use one of the Blue Sky Moments options listed HERE. The goal for today is to help students get comfortable with silence in the room and to quiet down internally.

Connecting

Connecting

See if a few students can name a time they were able to quiet themselves inside in a way that helped. You might have them stand in a circle, or if you’re at rug time and they’re just sitting clustered, they could answer from where they are.  Do what is easy for a whole group moment.)

Who was able to feel yourself get quieter inside?  Anything we could do to make this easier for anyone?

challenge

Daily Challenge

Today, when you have big feelings inside, think about whether those feelings are likely to help you be a great friend, like what happy feelings do, or whether they might move you toward doing something not so kind…. And if you feel like you might do something unkind, take a deep breath!

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Who was able to take a deep breath when they had big feelings inside? I’m so glad we have a way to work through those feelings!
