For Primary Teachers: Month 6

Week One

Day 1
prompt

Prompt

Sometimes people tell girls that they’re pretty, as if that is important. And lots of advertisements on television show girls being cute or pretty. Because of that, sometimes girls think it is more important to be pretty than to get dirty playing ball or running or learning how to fish. What are some of the things girls can do just as well as boys, as long as they don’t worry about whether they stay clean or look pretty?

Note:  The prompt leaves open the question whether there are just some things that girls can do as well as boys. This allows kids to say what they think of, but then in the reply to them, we’ll be reinforcing that girls can do essentially anything as well as boys. The goal is that we help both boys and girls recognize that our culture’s emphasis on girls being pretty ends up being a deterrent from some learning skills they see as being more male-appropriate.

Connecting

Connecting

Now when you talk with one another about this, talk about how girls can much do almost anything.

challenge

Daily Challenge

Today, notice how many people at our school are good at all kinds of different things, and how men and women can both do most everything. Some schools have principals that are women and some that are men. Teachers can be men or women. Some of the greatest chefs in the world are men. Some of the best business leaders are women.

Note: Use any example that may help shift the stigma of a male-only or female-only job.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Who noticed people who are good at things today? Did it matter if they were men or women?

tip

Prepare

Thursday will be a Community Circle Day and Friday will be a Blue Sky Moment.

Day 2

Today remember that it isn’t so important what we wear, but it is really important who we are on the inside!

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Did you notice people for who they are on the inside rather than just the clothes they wear?

Day 4
prompt

Prompt

Divide the class into groups of four to six students.

Today in your small group, popcorn style, take turns talking about the ways people include others. What can kids do so nobody is left out?

Connecting

Who took the time to use breathing to help them today?

Week Two

Day 1
prompt

Prompt

If you could have lunch with a superhero, with whom would it be?

Connecting

Connecting

Did your superheroes have anything in common? Did any of you choose the same superhero as your partner?

challenge

Daily Challenge

Think about the superheroes who make the world a better place, or who try to help people.  Today, think about how you can do that, too!

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Who worked on making the world a better place today? What did you do?

tip

Prepare

Thursday you’ll need a flip chart, white board, or chalkboard space.

Friday is another Blue Sky Moment.

Day 2
prompt

Prompt

When you want people to leave you alone, where do you go? What do you do?

Connecting

Connecting

Did you think of some of the same ways to be alone.

challenge

Daily Challenge

Giving people room to be alone for a little while is sometimes really helpful. Sometimes moms or dads have worked hard all day and need a little time of quiet. Sometimes big brothers or sisters had a bad day at school and they aren’t ready to be happy and play with little brothers and sisters right away. Remember, when someone needs a little time alone, it doesn’t mean they don’t love everybody just as much as always!

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Who remembers our talk earlier today about alone time? Keep remembering this — it will help you be patient with others when they need some alone time.

Day 3
prompt

Prompt

Think about people in our school.  Who are some of the people here who know how to help kids feel better about themselves? What kinds of things do they do that help?

Connecting

Connecting

It isn’t just adults that can help kids feel better about themselves. We can all help each other feel good. What are some things kids can say to each other to help one another feel better about themselves?

challenge

Daily Challenge

Today, see if you can find a time to say something that helps someone feel good about themselves.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Did everyone remember to say something that helps someone else feel better about themselves? We should all be feeling pretty great with all this encouragement!

Day 4
prompt

Community Circle

Prompt

Divide students into groups of 4-6 or do this at rug time.

Does anybody know what a motto is?

[See if they can contribute.]

A motto is a short sentence or a saying that we can all use and we know instantly what each other means. Mottos can help us remember how to be kind or helpful or they can help us work as a group to do better. Sometimes something someone says in a book can be a motto.

Today we’re going to generate a list of mottos we could use in our classroom or anywhere. Here is an example of a motto: “Never give up!” Another motto might be, “Treat others as you would like to be treated.”

Note: See if students can generate some ideas for mottos. Write them where students can see them if possible, or write the list to transfer onto the board later. We’re including a short list you can add if they don’t come up with much!

  • A smile is like sunshine in a room.
  • You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. ~A.A. Milne / Christopher Robin
  • Is it fair to everyone?
  • You can’t change what already happened, but you can change how you feel about it.
  • Be silly, be honest, be kind. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
  • When there is hard work to do, roll up your sleeves and dive in! [Describe what “roll up your sleeves” means.]
  • Choose friends that help you be a better person.
  • Be a friend that helps others be their best.
  • Think before you act.
  • Love makes the world go ‘round.

Week Three

Day 1
Introduction

Introduction

Today we’re going to talk about creativity. Creativity is using imagination to invent things or make things work better. Look around the classroom and notice all the things we have here: the glass in the windows or doors, our desks, our pencils and crayons. Fire hydrants, police cars, ballerina tutus… Someone invented all these things!

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Who was able to recognize creativity today? Who found a new way to be creative?

Day 4
Introduction

Community Circle Day

Introduction

People use creativity for a lot of different reasons. Sometimes it’s to help someone or make someone feel better. Sometimes it’s to solve a problem. There are a lot of really good reasons to be creative. When we’re creative, we usually feel really great about ourselves and our ideas.

prompt

Prompt

When it’s your turn, strike a pose that says, “I’m creative and I feel great!”  Let’s all cheer for everybody just the same!

challenge

Daily Challenge

Today, if you’re feeling a little down or sad, remember that creativity can help you feel better. Sometimes even saying, “I’m creative and I can do this!” can help us feel great. Sometimes making a creative pose at ourselves in the mirror can help too!

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Without thinking about it, we all do creating stuff all day long!  Can anybody give an example of something that happened today when you or someone else used creativity?

Day 5
prompt

Blue Sky Moment Day

Prompt

Use one of the Blue Sky Moments options listed HERE. The goal for today is to help students get comfortable with silence in the room and to quiet down internally.

Connecting

Connecting

Let’s stand up and face into the circle. We want to work toward all of us being comfortable with silence. We forget that we don’t need to fill every moment with our words! What can we do to help one another feel comfortable when we do Blue Sky Moments?

challenge

Daily Challenge

Being really quiet is one of the best ways to figure out how we’re feeling inside. Today see if you can find just one or two short moments when you can tune in and notice how you’re feeling inside.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Did anybody find time to pay attention to how you were feeling today? Great job!

Week Four

Day 1
prompt

Prompt

When people lived a very long time ago, tribes were very important for survival. People needed more than just their family to be safe from lions and tigers and bears. Tribes helped one another make it through life every day! Now there are lots of people in towns and cities, and we don’t need tribes to keep us safe from wild animals.  Who helps us be safe in our world today?

Connecting

Connecting

Did you have some of the same ideas?

challenge

Daily Challenge

Today, notice all the people in your world that help you be safe. Sometimes they’re people you know, and you even know their names. Sometimes they’re people you know are safe because they help on the playground. Or the crossing guards. Sometimes we know them because of their uniform, like police officers. Today, tell somebody who helps keep you safe “thank you!”

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Did anybody find somebody to thank today?

tip

Prepare

Thursday is a Community Circle and Friday is a Blue Sky Moment.

Day 2
prompt

Prompt

One thing that helps us solve problems is being curious. Someone was curious about how to keep us safe when we’re in a car accident, and they invented seat belts. What are some other things that people have invented that help us stay safe?

Connecting

Connecting

Now when you talk with your partner, see if the two of you can think of something that someone could invent that would be helpful. Anything you come up with is fine!

challenge

Daily Challenge

Today look for things that make you curious.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

What made you curious today?

Day 3
Introduction

Introduction

We learn to have BIG courage by practicing with smaller courage. So many things happen in our world because someone got curious. Sometimes curiosity leads to courage.

Think about the first trip to the moon. Someone had to ask, “Could we travel into space?”  There were a couple of tricky questions. Nobody knew if there were germs in space that would make people really sick. Then, if they got the rocket up in space, they didn’t know if they could get it back without crashing into the earth. It took lots of courage for astronauts to go into space! So that would be BIG courage. Today we’re going to look at courage that doesn’t have to be that big to make a real difference.

prompt

Prompt

Think about problems that kids have the you might be able to help solve. For example, what if a kid is bothering another kid on the bus. You could be curious about what you could say that might help that kid stop being mean. Then you might find the courage to say something out loud. Today, share your idea about what you could say to another kid who was being unkind to one of the other kids.

Connecting

Connecting

How can we help each other have courage?

challenge

Daily Challenge

Look for a moment when you need to use just a little bit of courage!

Blue Sky Moment

Prompt

Use one of the Blue Sky Moments options listed HERE.

Connecting

Connecting

Right now while we’re still quiet after having our Blue Sky Moment, let yourself be aware of something inside that feels really good right now.  What feels good?

challenge

Daily Challenge

Today see if there is a moment when you can be really quiet on the outside and help yourself get really quiet on the inside.

Note: Some time later in class, when kids are a bit noisy or distracted, you might use this to bring them back to being quieter: “Can you be quiet on the outside, and then can that help you find quiet on the inside? Take a deep breath and just relax! Let’s all do that together!”

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Let’s just practice taking that deep breath again and being quiet on the outside, and maybe close your eyes for just a moment to see if you can also find quiet on the inside… what feels good inside right now?
