Day 3
Introduction

Intro

Read the following one-minute story about the elephants:

A man whose name was Lawrence Anthony lived in South Africa.  He loved elephants so much that he wrote books about them.  He loved them so much that the found all of his courage and bravery and rescued elephants who had been injured by people.  He did this for his whole life, and he grew old, and finally he died.

Two days after he died, many wild elephants showed up at his home led by two large female elephants. A total of 31 wild elephants somehow knew that the man who worked to save elephants had died, and they walked over 12 miles to go stand outside his home.

Sometimes we think that we are smarter than animals, but not very many of us would know without anyone telling us that someone who helped people had died.  And even if someone thought that might have happened, 30 people probably wouldn’t just walk and walk for days to go to their home unless they were really sure he had died.  From this story, we can know that animals know things and communicate in ways that we humans don’t understand and don’t know how to do.

Note: Cut the shared time down if you need to keep this activity to five minutes, or let students know that this time, we’re just going to have them talk with their partners to see what ideas they have about how the elephants could know Mr. Anthony had died.

Note: More about this story can be read here.

Divide students into groups of 4-6.

Yesterday we heard the story about the elephants that came to the home of the man who had saved them.  The elephants clearly understood that this man had made great efforts to help them. Today in our circle, let’s come up with ideas or what we know about animals on the earth that need people like Mr. Anthony to protect them.

Most of our activities with 5 Radical Minutes is are about being kind to one another. Today let’s think about being kind to ALL the animals on the earth, not just the human ones!

Week Two

Day 1
prompt

Prompt

When we do something that hurts someone or hurts their feelings, we all know that telling someone we are sorry is an important thing to do. When friends accept our apology, they might say, “It’s OK.”  The word we use for the hurt person accepting an apology is forgiveness.

Why is forgiveness important? What are some ways we can tell someone they’re forgiven besides “It’s OK.”?

Day 4
prompt

Community Circle

Prompt

Today we’re going to talk in our circle about what we can do if we need to apologize, but we really don’t feel sorry yet. Maybe we’re still upset. It wouldn’t be honest to say you’re sorry if you aren’t, so what else could you say that would be honest, but also would be kind.

  • I know I hurt your feelings, and I know it is important to say I’m sorry, but I’m still really upset.
  • I think I need a little more time to think about it
  • I think I can talk about what happened, and maybe later I will be ready to say I’m sorry. I think I should wait until it feels honest to say so.
Connecting

Week Three

Day 1
prompt

Prompt

There are lots of things we can do when we want to help ourselves do something new or something difficult. One thing we can do is called “self talk.”  That’s when we say to ourselves, “I can do this!” Or “I’ve got this!”

With your partner, talk about a time you were able to use your own positive thoughts or self-talk to help yourself get through something or learn something new. What were you trying to do and what did you tell yourself?

Connecting

Connecting

What was similar about your stories?

Day 2

There are things we need to learn, like how to behave in school and how to do our assignments. There are also things we want to learn, like riding a bike or being able to play ball. Sometimes some things come easy, but lots of times we really need to work if we’re going to learn.

During your sharing time, come up with all the ideas you can about what you can say to yourself to feel encouraged to keep trying, and you might also talk about why it is important to learn how to work hard.

Connecting

You may want to debrief as a whole group for your connecting time.
