For Primary Teachers: Month 8

Week One

Day 1
Introduction

Intro

This week, we’re going to talk about goals. A goal is something you decide you’re going to do that will take work.  Some kids might have a goal of learning to shoot baskets, and some kids might have a goal of getting 100% on a math quiz. Others want to learn to ride a bike. A goal is an idea you get about something you want to accomplish.

prompt

Thursday will be a Community Circle and Friday is a Blue Sky Moment.

Day 2
prompt

Prompt

We watched a video a few weeks ago about two different athletes. We’ll watch it again today, but this time, think about what these two boys had to change about their thinking and their self-talk to start down the path they’re each on.

Watch the video until the boy finishes batting (1:16).

Connecting

What did you notice that was similar? What did your partner mention that you may not have considered before?

Today, consider what you can become. What you tell yourself right now can play a big part in all you’ll accomplish in the future.

High Five Finale

High Five Finale

Day 3
prompt

Prompt

One part of reaching goals is being able to see that it takes many small steps to get there. Let’s take two examples you all know, and see how many steps you can name for your example. If you are the first partner to speak, think of all the steps it takes to become a fire fighter. What are all the things someone would have to learn and do? And if you are the second partner, [choose one… doctor?  Farmer? Teacher?]

Connecting

Connecting

We’ll do this in our whole group today. Let’s hear all the things you thought of about what people need to learn if their goal is to become a fire fighter. And how about [whatever you chose], what are the many small steps to that goal?

Today, look for the small steps that will help you reach a goal.

Day 4

Community Circle

Prompt

There are some fun ways to greet friends. Of course we say hello, but there are other fun ways.

  • Adults might shake hands, but kids can do that, too.
  • Another one is a fist pump.
  • Another is a high five.
  • And there is the fish shake. [Demonstrate with one of the kids…. Put your right arms together as if you were going to shake hands, but move your hands up to your partner’s elbow, and then both of you wiggle your arms like a wiggling fish swimming upstream.]
  • Are there others you know or do?  [Let kids contribute].

So in our circle today, I’ll start, and I’m going to turn to the person on my left and I’m going to say what kind of gesture I want us to do, and we’ll do that. And then that person turns to the next person. Here’s the trick! We’re going to do all of them. I’ll start with a handshake, and as that gets a ways around the circle, I’ll turn to my same person and do a fist pump. And keep that going and we’ll see if we can get through all of them!
